A Gift that Never Grows Old

During times of gift giving we tend to think of what our loved ones would want the most.  While jewelry, home décor items or gift cards are lovely and even coveted gifts, they are also somewhat temporary.  We give gifts from our hearts and many of them have significant personal value to us but in the end they are objects that can break and even be lost.  While I don’t want to put a buzz kill on your gift giving, I do want to challenge you to think of a lasting gift that will be treasured for generations.  Giving the gift of your history or recording a loved one’s life history is the type of gift that won’t rust, fade or lose value no matter how much time has passed.

This may seem like a shameless business plug but in all honesty a recorded family history has more value than any time, effort or money spent on it.  Memoir writing is a one of a kind gift that is 100% personalized.  By recording a personal history you or your loved one is able to tell their story.  History is shared and family stories are recorded for generations to enjoy and discover.

One of my favorite things about recording a life story is being able to look into someone’s life, enjoy their stories and even gain a new perspective.  In my own experience my aunt wrote a short narrative about her mom (my grandma), my uncles and my dad.  In it, she wrote of family stories like a great aunt who visited and traded at every farm house between her home and the town she lived near.  When she went to sell her horse, the buyer couldn’t understand why the horse would stop at every house on the way into town.

She also included a lovely memory of my Dad, her older brother, holding her younger self while dancing around their living room and singing along with their old Victrola.

She loved these memories and I was able to learn about my family and see a younger side of my Dad.  This is something that I will always treasure.

Personal history is priceless.  Preserving a life story gives a gift that will always be enjoyed by family and friends.  It allows a unique view and helps you get to know those you love and have loved.

In short, if you want to give a priceless gift, give the gift of a recorded personal history.
